Bloodletting and Germs
Introducing Thomas C. Rosenthal MD
A Family Physician/Author
As an experienced Family Practice Physician based in Buffalo, I have enjoyed learning from my patients and understanding their histories. Now retired, I’m determined to understand the roots of American medical traditions, and the transcendence of caring across generations.

The History of Medicine
Understanding the Past to Inform the Future
I am a Family Practice Physician, retired from practice. Now I focus on nineteenth century medical history to better understand the trajectory of modern medical care.

Jabez Allen MD
Dr. Allen practiced in East Aurora NY from 1834 until 1884.
Bloodletting to Germs
Since Galen physicians believed that releasing blood would relieve capillary tension. Benjamin Rush believed it cured yellow fever in the 1793 Philadelphia epidemic. Physicians of the nineteenth century slowly abandoned the practice.
